Shekou Theater Complex
Urban Stage
The Urban Stage is the core concept of this design proposal, blurring the boundaries between the city and the theater, the audience and the performers, as well as between indoor and outdoor spaces. The proposal "excavates" the building to create a gradually elevated public terrace, defined by a curtain-like facade, resembling a city-scale stage at the heart of Shekou.
During the day, the curtain shimmers in the sunlight, with shifting light and shadow evoking memories of the fishing port, as if guiding the observer through the history of Shekou’s harbor. At night, when the lights come on, the public terrace reveals itself, exuding a festive atmosphere akin to a traditional stage. Pedestrians are drawn into the space, whether to rest briefly or to listen and participate in an impromptu community music rehearsal.
This "Urban Stage" design, with its modest form, integrates the surrounding street life into the building, becoming a transitional space between the three performance halls inside. In the confined site, the design not only expands the pedestrian space of the surrounding streets, increasing flexibility and capacity, but also creates more public interaction spaces. The varied platform heights connect both the internal performance areas and the surrounding urban blocks through a three-dimensional pedestrian system.
